Design Specification for LPDC Exhaust Duct, Exhaust Duct Size, Layout, Slag Blocking, Tempering and Blasting Prevention
Low pressure casting filling belongs to stable bottom filling, but if the gas in the mold cavity and the decomposition gas of the mold release agent cannot be discharged, it will form pores, cold shuts, and insufficient pouring at the end of the filling process; Opening the exhaust groove in the wrong size and position can easily lead to aluminum leakage, frequent slag blockage, and even backfire and blasting.
1、 Quantitative size standard for exhaust groove
Classification surface exhaust groove: The depth of the main exhaust groove is 0.15-0.25mm, and the width is 8-15mm; the secondary branch exhaust groove is 0.10-0.15mm.
The end of the exhaust groove is collected in the slag collection bag, which generally has a volume of 3% -5% of the cavity volume. It receives cold materials and oxidized slag to avoid the slag directly blocking the exhaust groove.
Upper limit of exhaust groove depth: A356 aluminum liquid is prone to aluminum leakage beyond 0.3mm under low-pressure filling pressure; The lower limit for thin-walled components is 0.10-0.15mm.
Exhaust groove length: The length of a single exhaust groove should not exceed 25mm. If it is too long, aluminum liquid may easily invade; Multi stage exhaust, with the first stage shallow and the second stage gradually deepening to release pressure.
The exhaust plan of Xinfeng Machinery follows the principle that the gas collection direction is in the same direction as the front edge of the aluminum liquid filling, and the exhaust and slag collection bags are prioritized for the end hot section and the filling far end.
2、 Exhaust groove layout, pit avoidance, and point inspection and maintenance
The exhaust groove is arranged at the final position of filling, the highest point of the mold cavity, the end of the thin wall, and dead corners; Do not place it near the sprue, as the pressure of the sprue aluminum liquid is high and it is easy to penetrate the exhaust groove and run aluminum.
The exhaust groove cannot span the sealing strip, and the sealing strip must be continuous and complete; The exhaust endpoint ends on the inside of the sealing strip, and the pressure relief channel is led out to the outside of the sealing strip.
Polishing the surface of the exhaust groove with a roughness of Ra ≤ 1.6 to reduce wall blockage caused by oxidation slag; Clean the exhaust groove aluminum slag every 1500-2000 mold cycles for mass production.
For blind holes and deep core positions, priority should be given to using exhaust pins and exhaust inserts, rather than relying solely on the parting surface for exhaust; Blind hole gas retention is a high incidence point for concealed gas pores.
3、 Differences in exhaust solutions for overseas customers
Southeast Asian customers have deep exhaust ducts for easy exhaust, and accept a small amount of burrs. Operators regularly polish and clean them.
The North American Tier 1 exhaust and slag collection package drawings are solidified, and the depth tolerance of the exhaust groove is strict. The running of aluminum is a fixture abnormality and needs to be stopped for rectification.
European customers prefer fine and multi branch exhaust, combined with independent slag collection bags, to control aluminum liquid intrusion, reduce cleaning frequency, and improve OEE.
The filling path of large castings in the Middle East is long, with segmented and multi-stage exhaust, and multi-stage slag collection bags are set up to prevent remote gas holding and avoid tempering of release agent decomposition gas at high temperatures.
4、 Poor exhaust defect chain
Remote no exhaust → gas wrapped in aluminum liquid → subcutaneous pores, insufficient pouring at the filling end;
The exhaust groove is too deep → aluminum liquid enters the exhaust groove → continuous flash and blockage of the exhaust;
The exhaust groove spans the sealing strip → sealing failure, and aluminum runs over a large area of the parting surface;
The exhaust groove is clogged with slag and the exhaust gradually becomes ineffective, resulting in a gradual decrease in yield.
5、 Long tail traffic layout ideas
Low pressure casting exhaust groove, slag collection bag, exhaust pin, LPDC exhaust, aimed at mold and process engineers.
Keywords: LPDC vent design specification, low pressure casting overflow and vent;
Problem class: Vent groove depth for A356 low pressure casting;
Comparison class: Partial line vent vs vent insert pin for blind core.
Suitable for DFM special page of charging exhaust.
6、 Common misconceptions in the industry
Misconception 1: The deeper the exhaust groove, the better the exhaust. If the depth exceeds the standard, the aluminum will run directly and the exhaust groove will be quickly sealed by aluminum slag.
Misconception 2: The exhaust groove is located next to the sprue, and the sprue pressure is high, making it easy for aluminum liquid to rush into the exhaust groove.
Misconception 3: Once the exhaust groove is opened, there is no need for maintenance, and the oxidation slag continues to hang on the wall, resulting in exhaust failure after thousands of molds.
FAQ
Q: What is the depth of the main exhaust groove on the parting surface?
A:0.15–0.25mm。
Q: What is the volume ratio of the slag collection bag?
A: The cavity volume is 3% -5%.
Q: Can the exhaust groove cut off the sealing tape?
A: No, it will cause aluminum leakage.
Q: How to exhaust the blind hole position?
A: Exhaust pins or exhaust inserts.
Q: What is the cleaning cycle for the exhaust duct?
A: 1500-2000 cycles.
Q: Why add a slag collection bag at the end of the exhaust groove?
