LPDC reheating material control, material block classification, slag removal, degassing, proportion, impurity prevention and control
Recycled materials are a key variable in the production cost of LPDC. If the sprue, riser, scrap parts, and flash edge are mixed, contaminated, or the proportion is out of control, it will cause continuous exceeding of iron, hydrogen, and oxide standards, deterioration of metallographic structure, and batch explosion of slag inclusion in pores. Many factories only focus on the main materials and ignore the management of recycled materials.
1、 Classification of recycled materials, upper limit of proportioning, and standardized labeling
Primary return to furnace material: clean sprue, slag collection bag, no oil stains, no heat-treated oxide skin, with a maximum return to furnace ratio of 40%;
Secondary recycled materials: appearance scrap parts, a small amount of castings with release agents, with a maximum proportion of 25%;
Third level reheating material: containing oil stains, machined aluminum shavings, and sand stained parts, strictly controlled to ≤ 10%, with priority given to individual remelting and refining.
Suggestions for the proportion of A356 conventional total return furnace materials: stabilize mass production control at 20-35%, and make up for the excess with new materials; High demand automotive X-ray parts, with a control of ≤ 20% for recycled materials.
Recycled materials should be stored separately in designated areas and labeled with materials. Mixing different grades of aluminum alloys is strictly prohibited. Mixing A356, A380, and ADC12 can directly cause excessive silicon and magnesium.
Xinfeng Machinery provides customers with a grading ledger for recycled materials, recording the proportion and source of recycled materials for each batch, and corresponding aluminum liquid spectral records.
2、 Pre treatment of recycled materials, smelting and refining, and degassing process
Before feeding the recycled materials into the furnace: remove rubber, sealing gasket, plastic, and sediment; Burn and remove oil from oily blocks first to avoid introducing hydrogen and carbon impurities.
Feeding sequence: first melt the new aluminum ingot, then add clean feed back to the furnace, and finally a small amount of dirty material; Do not invest a large amount of cold return furnace material at once, as it may cause significant temperature drop and severe oxidation.
When the proportion of recycled materials increases, it is necessary to simultaneously increase the refining agent and degassing time, and extend the rotary degassing time by 20-30%; The target hydrogen content is ≤ 0.12ml/100g.
The frequency of slag removal has increased, resulting in a higher amount of oxidized slag and a thicker slag layer in the recycled material. If slag is not removed in a timely manner, it will continue to be rolled into the aluminum liquid, forming slag inclusions.
3、 Differences in Control of Returned Materials from Overseas Customers
Southeast Asian recycled materials are not graded, mixed and melted, with a recycling ratio of over 60%, low cost, and large fluctuations in defects.
Tier 1 mandatory classification in North America, with the upper limit of the return ratio written into the control plan. Third level return materials are prohibited from being used for X-ray pressure parts, and spectra must be inspected for each furnace.
European customers trace their recycled materials back to individual pieces, record the source of each batch of recycled materials, strictly lock in impurity content, and prioritize low recycling ratios.
The large-scale casting production line in the Middle East mainly uses clean gates for recycled materials, rarely mixing scrap parts, and controlling impurity fluctuations.
4、 Defective chain of recycled materials
Mixing of different grades → component deviation, exceeding the standard of silicon magnesium iron → unqualified mechanical properties;
Large amount of oily and dirty materials returning to the furnace → soaring hydrogen content → batch explosion of gas pores;
High recycling ratio, insufficient refining → excessive oxidation slag → X-ray slag inclusion;
Wet recycled materials are directly fed into the furnace → water vapor enters the furnace, and hydrogen rises rapidly.
5、 Long tail traffic layout ideas
Low pressure casting recycling material management, A356 recycling ratio, aluminum liquid slag and gas removal, facing the smelting supervisor.

6、 Common misconceptions in the industry
Misconception 1: The recycled materials are all of the same material, mixed together randomly for melting. Oil stains, impurities, and moisture will continue to contaminate the aluminum liquid.
Misconception 2: The more recycled materials, the more cost-effective it is. However, if the proportion is too high, the defect rate of slag inclusion in pores will increase, and the overall cost will actually be higher.
Misconception 3: The sprue materials are all clean materials, and if they are directly thrown into the furnace, the carbon deposition on the surface of the sprue release agent will also produce gas.
